what is aggression? any form of behavior intended to cause harm
what is hostile aggression? the goal is to inflict pain
what is instrumental aggression? aggression is a means to some other end
what are manifestations of aggression? physical, verbal, relational, direct and indirect aggression
what is relational aggression/ social aggression? intent to cause harm but to relationships
what is direct aggression? aggression is directed at the target of anger/frustration
what is indirect aggression? redirection to the target other than the source of frustration
what are the theories of aggression? biological, psychological, social, cultural and social psych
what does the theory of aggression say about biological? its in the brain, instincts, alcohol, testosterone, and genes
what does the theory of aggression say about psychological? narcissism, frustration-aggression theory and revised frustration-aggression theory
what is narcissism? inflated view of self
what is the frustration-aggression theory? frustration elicits motive to agress
what is the revised frustration- aggression theory? frustration produces anger which leads to aggression
what does the theory of aggression say about social? social learning and socialization
what is the social learning theory (banduras version) we learn behavior by observing, imitating, by being rewarded/punished
how does socialization/modeling create aggressive behaviors? creates a cycle of abuse/violentization
why does media influence aggression? creates arousal, disinhibition and imitation
what is disinhibition? viewing violence can make it seem more normal
how does social psych create aggressive behaviors? (aversive situations = unpleasant so more likely to agress) pain / attack, temperature, and crowding
how can you reduce aggression? by catharsis and social learning approach
what is catharsis? emotional release. typically acting aggresively or fantasizing about aggression.
