Unit 8 Ecology

Ecology - biomes, food webs/chains, symbiosis, cycles, carrying capacity

QuestionAnswer
Ecology means - the study of how organisms interact with their environment.
Biotic means - All living organisms
Abiotic means - All non living organisms
Habitat is - the environment where an organims lives
Niche means - the job or role an organism has. For example, a tiger's job is to eat other organisms.
What is a food chain - One pathway of energy
What is a food web - Many pathways of energy
What is a population? The number of organisms in an area
What is a communigy? All of the living organisms in an area - animals, plants, insects, birds, etc.
What is an ecosystem? All biotic and abiotic in an area
What is a biome? A larger area that shares the same weather, plants, animals
In this biome - there are lots of canopy trees, ferns, vines, and lots of rain! Animals like wild cats, snakes, monkeys could be found here. Tropical Rain Forest
In this biome - the trees lose their leaves in the fall - lots of fall colors. We live here. Oak, maple, and birch are popular trees. Animals such as birds, rabbits, fox, deer can be found here. Deciduous Forrest
In this biome - very small amount of rain, cool nights and hot days. Animals such as mice, lizards, snakes can be found here along with cacti. Desert Biome
This biome is found in Canada and Russia. Lots of evergreens and pine trees. Lots of deer, moose, squirrels, lynx, porcupines. Coniferous Forest
In this biome - it is very cold, permafrost is permanently frozen ground. Small plants, caribou, oxen, wolves can be found here. Tundra
In this marine biome - you would see the tide coming in and out, or it is where the water meets the land. We call it the beach - Intertidal
In this marine biome - you would find coral, tropical fish and it is found on the contenental shelf. Neritic
In this marine biome, you would find whales, sea turtles since it is the deep open ocean. Oceanic
This is the deep, dark ocean floor - Benthic
In this fresh water biome, you would find lots of grasses and small plants. No trees Marsh
In this fresh water biome, you would find lots of small plants and trees. Swamp
We live in the world's largest! It is were fresh and salt water mix. Estuary
The beginning of all energy in a food web, chain, or pyramid is the - Sun
________________ uses the sun's energy to make their own food Producer (autotrophic)
_______________ has to eat other organisms to get their energy Consumers (heterotrophic)
_______________ breaks down dead organisms and or their waste Decomposers
____________ is a level of consumer that eat the primary consumers Secondary
When looking at a food web or chain, the arrow always points to - where the energy is going!
When looking at an energy pyramid, the amount of energy getting passed from one level to another is only - 10%
Symbiosis means - The relationship between two organisms
A relationship where both organisms benefit - win - win is called - Mutualism
A relationship where one organisms benefits and the other is not impacted - win, meh is called Commensalisms
A relationship where one organism benefits and the other is harmed is called - Parasitism
Limiting factors would inlcude items that can become or are scarce - water, space, food
What is carrying capacity - The number of animals that an area can support to be happy and healthy
What are some ways humans impact our environment? Pollution, resource depletion, alien species, human population, habitat destruction
Words such as condensation, evaporation, precipitation, would describe which cycle - Water
Words such as atmosphere, emissions, fossil fuels, animals breathing, photosynthesis, would describe which cycle - Carbon
Words such as bacteria, lightning, roots, soil, gases, would describe which cycle? Nitrogen
