Anatomical Positions
Movements
| Term | Definition |

| Flexion | bending the joint to decrease the angle of the bones |
| Extension | straightening the joint to increase the angle of the bones |
| Abduction | moving body part away from midline |
| Adduction | moving body part towards midline |
| Medial Rotation | turning inward towards body or midline |
| Lateral Rotation | turning outward away from body or midline |
| Elevation | upward movement of body part |
| Depression | downward movement of body part |
| Pronation | rotation of the forearm, palm facing posteriorly |
| Supination | rotation of the forearm, palm facing anteriorly |
| Dorsiflexion | bending motion upward |
| Plantarflexion | bending motion downward |
| Inversion | sole of foot turns inward |
| Eversion | sole of foot turns outward |
| Oppposition | movement of thumb opposes or touches tips of fingers |
| Repostion | movement of body part back to anatomical position |
| Circumduction | body part of joint moves in circular direction |
| Protraction | moving body part forward/anteriorly |
| Retraction | moving body part backward/posteriorly |
| Excursion | moving away from central point |
| Protrusion | the action of pushing something forward |
| Retrusion | the posterior movement of body part |
