Directions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Frontal | the anterior (front) part of the body |
| Sagittal | vertical plane that divides body into left and right regions |
| Transverse | horizontal plane that divides body in superior and inferior regions |
| Superior/cephalad/cranial | above, towards the head |
| Posterior/dorsal | the back of the structure or body |
| Anterior/ventral | the front of the structure or body |
| Proximal | closer to the point of attachment of the body |
| Distal | further away from the point of attachment of the body |
| Inferior/caudal | lower or below the head |
| Medial | closer to the midline of the structure or the body |
| Lateral | away from the midline of the structure or the body |
| Superficial | closer to the body surface |
| Deep | away from the body surface |
| Axial | around the central axis |
| Ipsilateral | on the same side of the structure or the body |
| Bilateral | involving both sides of the structure or the body |
| Contralateral | on opposite side of the body |
