Anatomical Postions

Directions

TermDefinition
Frontal the anterior (front) part of the body
Sagittal vertical plane that divides body into left and right regions
Transverse horizontal plane that divides body in superior and inferior regions
Superior/cephalad/cranial above, towards the head
Posterior/dorsal the back of the structure or body
Anterior/ventral the front of the structure or body
Proximal closer to the point of attachment of the body
Distal further away from the point of attachment of the body
Inferior/caudal lower or below the head
Medial closer to the midline of the structure or the body
Lateral away from the midline of the structure or the body
Superficial closer to the body surface
Deep away from the body surface
Axial around the central axis
Ipsilateral on the same side of the structure or the body
Bilateral involving both sides of the structure or the body
Contralateral on opposite side of the body
