Vocabulary words and definitions for Unit 2: Matter

QuestionAnswer
Matter anything that has mass and volume (takes up space)
Pure Substance a type of matter that can be written as a chemical formula or symbol because it has very specific contents and ratios
Element any amount of one kind of atom
Compound 2 or more different elements joined together ionically in a specific ratio
Molecule 2 or more elements joined together covalently in a specific ratio
Mixture two or more substances mixed together
Homogenous Mixture mixture where the substances are randomly distributed
Heterogeneous Mixture mixture where the substances are NOT randomly distributed
Plasma high energy electrically charged gas particles
Solid a substance exhibiting rigidity
Liquid composed of molecules that move freely among themselves but do not tend to separate like those of gases
Gas a substance possessing perfect molecular mobility and the property of indefinite expansion
Property a feature or characteristic of matter or the way it behaves
Physical Property a characteristic of matter that can be observed without changing the chemical composition of the substance
Physical Change a change in size, shape, or state (phase) of a substance
Chemical Property the ability of a substance to react with other substances
Chemical Change when 1 or more substances react to form 1 or more new substances
Density the universal physical property of matter that compares an objects mass to its volume
