| Biosphere | The parts of Earth and the surrounding atmosphere where there is life |
| Community | All the populations living in an ecosystem at the same time |
| Population | All the organisms of the same species that live in the same area at the same time |
| Competition | The demand for resources,such as food,water and shelter, in short supply in a community |
| Limiting Factor | A factor that can limit the growth of a population |
| population density | The size of a population compared to the amount of space avaliable |
| Biotic potential | The potential growth of a population if it could grow in perfect conditions with no limiting factors |
| Carrying capacity | The largest number of individuals of one species that an ecosystem can support over time. |
| Birthrate | The number of offspring produced by a population over a given time period |
| deathrate | The number of indivuduals in a population that die over a given time period. |
| extinct species | A species that has died out and no individuals are left |
| endangered species | A species whose population is at risk of extinction |
| threatened species | A species at risk, but not yet endangered |
| migration | The instinctive, seasonal movement of a population of organisms from one place to another |
| Habitiat | The place within an ecosystem where an organism lives; provides the biotic and abiotic factors an organism needs to survive and reproduce |
| niche | The way a species interacts with abiotic and biotic factors to obtain food, find shelter, and fulfill other needs. |
| producer | An organism that uses an outside energy source, such as the sun, and produces its own food |
| consumer | An organism that cannot make its own food and gets energy by eating other organisms. |
| symbiosis | A close, long term relationship between two species that usually involves an exchange of food or energy. |
| mutualism | A symbiotic relationship in which both organisms benifits |
| parasitism | a symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is harmed |
