Blood Vessels
Blood Vessels and Circulatory Routes
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is the main function of arteries? | Arteries carry blood away from the heart, usually oxygenated (except pulmonary arteries). |
| What is the main function of veins? | Veins carry blood toward the heart, usually deoxygenated (except pulmonary veins). |
| What is the function of capillaries? | Capillaries allow exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste between blood and tissues. |
| How do arteries differ structurally from veins? | Arteries have thicker, more muscular walls to handle high pressure; veins have thinner walls and valves to prevent backflow. |
| Why do veins have valves? | To prevent the backflow of blood, especially in the limbs where blood flows against gravity |
| hat are the two major circulatory routes in the body? | Systemic circulation and pulmonary circulation. |
| What is systemic circulation? | The circulation of oxygenated blood from the heart to the body and return of deoxygenated blood back to the heart. |
| What is pulmonary circulation? | The circulation of blood from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart for gas exchange. |
| Which vessel carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart? | Pulmonary veins. |
| What is the aorta, and what is its role? | The aorta is the largest artery in the body; it carries oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to the systemic circulation |
