| Alkali Metal | Shiny metals that are highly reactive to water and soft enough to cut with a knife |
| Alkaline Earth Metals | Compounds with these metals are found in our bodies and in the Earth's crust |
| Transition Metals | Strong metals that are unpredictable. They can form different amounts of bonds. It is common to find unbonded forms of these elements. |
| Nonmetals | All of the elements to the right side of the "staircase" on your periodic table. |
| Metals | The majority of the elements on the periodic table. Shiny, strong, and can conduct heat & electricity. |
| Halogens | Poisonous nonmetallic elements that are highly reactive. These elements become -1 ions. |
| Noble Gases | Stable elements that are commonly found unbonded to any other atom. These elements are nonflammable and colorless. |
| Lanthanides | This family of elements is a row on the bottom of the periodic table. These elements are part of period 6. |
| Actinides | This family of elements is a row on the bottom of the periodic table. These elements are part of period 7. |
| Period | A horizontal row on the periodic table. |
| Group | A vertical column on the periodic table. |
