TermDefinition
Alkali Metal Shiny metals that are highly reactive to water and soft enough to cut with a knife
Alkaline Earth Metals Compounds with these metals are found in our bodies and in the Earth's crust
Transition Metals Strong metals that are unpredictable. They can form different amounts of bonds. It is common to find unbonded forms of these elements.
Nonmetals All of the elements to the right side of the "staircase" on your periodic table.
Metals The majority of the elements on the periodic table. Shiny, strong, and can conduct heat & electricity.
Halogens Poisonous nonmetallic elements that are highly reactive. These elements become -1 ions.
Noble Gases Stable elements that are commonly found unbonded to any other atom. These elements are nonflammable and colorless.
Lanthanides This family of elements is a row on the bottom of the periodic table. These elements are part of period 6.
Actinides This family of elements is a row on the bottom of the periodic table. These elements are part of period 7.
Period A horizontal row on the periodic table.
Group A vertical column on the periodic table.
