Antibiotic Types

Antibiotic type, Bactericidal/Bacteriostatic, and examples

TypeBactericidal/BacteriostaticExamplesNotes
Penicillins (Beta-Lactam Antibiotics with Cephalosporins) Bactericidal amoxicillin (Amoxil, Augmentin) Side effects: ---Dermatologic: Rash ---GI: Diarrhea, nausea/vomiting ---Neurologic: headache ---Unnecessary/sustained use - antibiotic resistance -Work by damaging the cell wall of the bacteria (Bactericidal) -Treat wide range of infections
Cephalosporins (Beta-Lactam Antibiotics with Penicillins) Bactericidal cephalexin (Keflex), cefdinir (Omnicef), cefuroxime (Ceftin oral susp) -Work by damaging the cell wall of the bacteria (bactericidal) -Treat wide range of infections like ear and sinus infections, UTIs, GI infections
Fluoroquinolones "Quinolones" Bactericidal ciprofloxacin (Cipro or Ciloxan (ophthalmic solution)), levofloxacin (Levaquin) Side effects: ---GI: Dysgeusia (taste changes), nausea ---Neurologic: Headache, insomnia ---CV: QT prolongation ---BLACK BOX: peripheral neuropathy, tendonitis -Tread a wide range of infections like UTIs and respiratory infections, or resistant infec
Nitroimidazoles Bactericidal Metronidazole -- Flagyl -Work by inhibiting bacterial nucleic acid synthesis -Treat a wide range of anaerobic infections, like GI, skin, UTIs, bone, blood, CNS, hear, and lower respiratory Antiprotozoal activity on parasites like trichromonas and amoeba
Nitrofurans Bactericidal Nitrofurantoin -- Macrodantin or Macrobid or Furadantin Several mechanisms: disrupting bacterial protein, cell walls, RNA, and DNA synthesis (Bactericidal) --Nitrofurantoin has large crystal structure good for UTIs --Not appropriate for Elderly patients
Tetracyclines Bactericidal Doxycycline -- Vibramycin or Doryx ยง Treat a wide range of infections, like intestinal, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and eyes Side effects: - Don't take with Dairy products or antacids because it will cause chelation -Tetracyclines Can cause photosensitivity
Sulfonamides "Sulfa Drugs" Bacteriostatic Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim -- Bactrim or Septra Work by inhibiting bacteria's ability to make folic acid, which is needed for reproduction (bacteriostatic) Treat a wide range of infections including UTIs, bronchitis and prostate infections
Macrolides "Erythromycin Antibiotics" Bacteriostatic Azithromycin -- Zithromax Side effects: ---GI: abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea ---Neurologic: headache, somnolence ---Cardiovascular (CV): QT prolongation ---Liver toxicity/jaundice -Treat a wide range of infections including UTIs, ear, resp tract
Lincosamides (lincomycin antibiotics) Bacteriostatic Clindamycin -- Cleocin Work by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis needed for replication Treat a wide range of anaerobic infections including dental, respiratory, skin, bone, and soft tissue infections --NOT related to macrolides, despite "-mycin"
Pseudomonic acids Bacteriostatic Mupirocin -- Bactroban cream or ointment -Mupirocin is a mixture of several pseudomonic acids, which inhibit bacterial RNA and protein synthesis (bateriostatic) -Treats a wide range of skin infections typically due to Staph or Strep (impetigo, open wounds, MRSA

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
