Vocabulary words and definitions for Unit 1

| Observation | the process of gathering information thorough the senses |
| Inference | a judgment based on reasoning from evidence |
| Facts | observations that are done & communicated correctly by a competent observer and are able to be repeated with the same results |
| Hypothesis | an idea, suggested solution or guess formed to solve a problem |
| Laws | a "rule" of nature that explains what happens in nature (sometimes how) |
| Theory | an explanation of an event that attempts to explain why (sometimes how) it occurs by tying together facts, laws and inferences |
| Models | a physical, verbal or mathematical representation that is similar to the concept and is used to explain more difficult ideas |
| Properties | features or characters of matter or the way it behaves |
| Physical Science | the study of matter and energy |
| Technology | "applied science" that applies research science to our everyday lives to make it easier (inventions) |
| Research (Pure) Science | the continuing search for new knowledge |
| Experiment | an organized process used to gather information to test a hypothesis using carefully monitored conditions |
| Controlled Experiment | an experiment that has a control group |
| Experimental Group | the group or groups in an experiment in which the independent variable is changed |
| Control Group | the group in an experiment in which the independent variable is not adjusted but left naturally-used as a comparison group to base your experimental results on |
| Factors | conditions that could change the results of the experiment if you let them |
| Variable | factors that are allowed to change in an experiment |
| Independent Variable | the factor in an experiment that is adjusted by the experimenter |
| Dependent or Responding Variable | the factor in an experiment that responds to changes in the independent variable |
| Constants | all other factors are not allowed to change between test groups |
| Data | observations that are recorded in an experiment |
| Analysis | critically evaluating data to determine trends and form conclusions |
| Conclusion | inferences at the completion of an experiment used to explain the data using generalizations |
