| predator | This organism hunts prey to eat |
| prey | this is eaten by a predator |
| food chain | shows how energy is transferred from one organism to another in a single path |
| food web | a network of interconnected food chains. Shows many pathways of energy. |
| consumer | organisms that need to eat other organisms to get energy |
| primary consumer | first organism to eat in a food chain. HERBIVORES. |
| secondary consumer | the second organism to eat in a food chain. They eat the primary consumer. |
| producer | an organism that makes their own food. PLANTS |
| tertiary consumer | eats primary and secondary consumers. OMNIVORES OR CARNIVORES |
| scavenger | An organism that feeds on dead plants or animals. |
| decomposer | speeds up the decaying process by releasing nutrients back into the soil. |
| carnivore | organisms that eat only meat. |
| omnivore | organisms that eat both meat and plants |
| herbivore | organisms that only eat plants |
| sun | primary source of energy. Needs for plants in photosynthesis. Plants are the producers in the food chain. |
