predator This organism hunts prey to eat
prey this is eaten by a predator
food chain shows how energy is transferred from one organism to another in a single path
food web a network of interconnected food chains. Shows many pathways of energy.
consumer organisms that need to eat other organisms to get energy
primary consumer first organism to eat in a food chain. HERBIVORES.
secondary consumer the second organism to eat in a food chain. They eat the primary consumer.
producer an organism that makes their own food. PLANTS
tertiary consumer eats primary and secondary consumers. OMNIVORES OR CARNIVORES
scavenger An organism that feeds on dead plants or animals.
decomposer speeds up the decaying process by releasing nutrients back into the soil.
carnivore organisms that eat only meat.
omnivore organisms that eat both meat and plants
herbivore organisms that only eat plants
sun primary source of energy. Needs for plants in photosynthesis. Plants are the producers in the food chain.
