Sexual reproduction The process of reproduction involving two parents that combine their genetic material to produce genetically unique offspring.
Asexual reproduction A type of reproduction that requires only one parent and produces genetically identical offspring.
Mitosis A type of cell division that results in two identical daughter cells, used for growth and repair.
Fragmentation A form of asexual reproduction where an organism splits into pieces, each of which grows into a new organism.
Budding – A type of asexual reproduction in which a new organism grows off the body of the parent.
Parthenogenesis A form of reproduction where an egg develops into an organism without fertilization.
Fertilization The union of a sperm cell and an egg cell to form a zygote.
Internal fertilization Fertilization that occurs inside the female’s body.
External fertilization Fertilization that occurs outside the body, usually in water.
Development The process by which an organism grows and matures.
Chromosome A structure in the nucleus that contains genetic material (DNA).
Haploid A cell with half the normal number of chromosomes, such as sperm or egg cells.
Diploid A cell that contains two complete sets of chromosomes, one from each parent.
Gamete A reproductive cell (sperm or egg) that carries half the genetic material of an organism.
Daughter cells The two identical cells produced after mitosis.
Cell division The process by which a cell divides into two or more cells. (Mitosis)
Genetic material DNA and associated molecules that contain an organism’s genetic information.
Ovaries The female reproductive organs that produce eggs and hormones.
Testes The male reproductive organs that produce sperm and testosterone.
Fallopian tubes Tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus.
Vas deferens The duct that transports sperm from the testes to the urethra.
Uterus The organ where fertilized eggs implant and develop into a fetus.
Ovulation The release of an egg from the ovary.
Menstrual cycle The monthly cycle of changes in the female reproductive system that prepares the body for pregnancy.
Placenta The organ that provides nutrients and oxygen to the developing fetus.
Implantation The process where a fertilized egg attaches to the uterus lining.
