| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Wall | A rigid outer layer found in plant cells that provides support and protection. |
| Cell Membrane | A barrier that controls what enters and exits the cell, found in both plant and animal cells. |
| Mitochondria | The "powerhouse" of the cell that produces energy through cellular respiration. |
| Nucleus | The control center of the cell that contains DNA and directs all cellular activities. |
| Cell | The basic unit of life, making up all living organisms |
| Cell theory | A scientific theory stating that all living things are made of cells, cells are the basic unit of life, and all cells come from preexisting cells. |
| Vacuoles | Storage organelles that hold water, nutrients, and waste; larger in plant cells. |
| Cytoplasm | A gel-like substance that holds organelles and allows cellular processes to occur. |
| Theory | A well-tested explanation supported by evidence that explains a broad range of observations. |
| Homeostasis | The process by which the body maintains a stable internal environment. |
| Organ System | Groups of organs that work together to perform specific functions. |
| Tissue | Groups of similar cells that work together to perform a function. |
| Cells | The basic unit of life that makes up tissues and organs. |
| Circulatory System | Transports oxygen, nutrients, and waste through the blood; includes the heart and blood vessels. |
| Digestive System | Breaks down food and absorbs nutrients; includes the stomach, intestines, and liver. |
| Muscular System | Enables movement through the contraction of muscles. |
| Respiratory System | Facilitates breathing and gas exchange; includes the lungs and trachea. |
| Skeletal System | Provides structure, support, and protection; includes bones and joints. |
