TermDefinition
Cell Wall A rigid outer layer found in plant cells that provides support and protection.
Cell Membrane A barrier that controls what enters and exits the cell, found in both plant and animal cells.
Mitochondria The "powerhouse" of the cell that produces energy through cellular respiration.
Nucleus The control center of the cell that contains DNA and directs all cellular activities.
Cell The basic unit of life, making up all living organisms
Cell theory A scientific theory stating that all living things are made of cells, cells are the basic unit of life, and all cells come from preexisting cells.
Vacuoles Storage organelles that hold water, nutrients, and waste; larger in plant cells.
Cytoplasm A gel-like substance that holds organelles and allows cellular processes to occur.
Theory A well-tested explanation supported by evidence that explains a broad range of observations.
Homeostasis The process by which the body maintains a stable internal environment.
Organ System Groups of organs that work together to perform specific functions.
Tissue Groups of similar cells that work together to perform a function.
Cells The basic unit of life that makes up tissues and organs.
Circulatory System Transports oxygen, nutrients, and waste through the blood; includes the heart and blood vessels.
Digestive System Breaks down food and absorbs nutrients; includes the stomach, intestines, and liver.
Muscular System Enables movement through the contraction of muscles.
Respiratory System Facilitates breathing and gas exchange; includes the lungs and trachea.
Skeletal System Provides structure, support, and protection; includes bones and joints.
