What are the three main groups of lipids? Triglycerides, phospholipids, sterols
What is the function of triglycerides in the body? Source of energy for the body
What is the function of phospholipids in the body? Protective membrane for cells, regulates what enters/exits cell
What is the function of sterols in the body? Maintains cell fluidity
What is a chylomicron? Carry digested fats through lymphatic system into the bloodstream
What is VLDL? Very low-density lipoproteins, deliver fat made in liver to cells
What is LDL? Low-density lipoproteins, "bad" cholesterol, deposit cholesterol on walls of arteries
What is HDL? High-density lipoproteins, "good" cholesterol, remove bad cholesterol from body and sends to liver for excretion
What are essential fatty acids? Omega 3 and Omega 6
What are saturated fats? Solid at room temp, found typically in animal products
What are unsaturated fats? Liquid at room temp, found typically in plant products
What are two examples of saturated fats? Butter, Lard
What are two examples of unsaturated fats? Nuts, Olive Oil
What is atherosclerosis? The narrowing of arteries from build up of pl
What are the building blocks of protein? Amino Acids
What are essential amino acids? Cannot be made in the body, must be obtained from food?
How does your body digest and absorb proteins? Proteins are broken down and denatured by stomach acid, smaller to digest into bloodstream and liver
What is a positive nitrogen balance in the human body? More nitrogen is retained than is excreted
What is a negative nitrogen balance in the human body? More nitrogen is excreted than consumed
What is a complete protein? Contains all essential amino acids, additionally nonessential amino acids
What happens if someone does not consume enough protein? Loss of muscle and body mass, decreased immune function, risk of frailty
What are vitamins? Tasteless, essential organic nutrients
Which vitamins can our bodies make? Vitamin D and Vitamin K
What is the function of Vitamin A? Eyesight, collagen production, fetal development
What foods are rich in Vitamin A? Carrots, liver, pumpkin
What is the function of Vitamin E? An antioxidant
What is the function of Vitamin K? Blood clotting, bone health
What is the function of Vitamin D? Production of bone minerals (calcium, phosphorus), prevents cancers and disease
Where does the body store Vitamin D? Liver
What foods are rich in Vitamin D? Dairy, fatty fish
What are rickets and osteomalacia? Soft and weakened bones, can cause deformities
What does hypervitaminosis D do? Very high calcium levels, causes digestive problems and can damage kidneys
What is the function of Vitamin C? Produces collagen, antioxidant, immune system support
What foods are rich in Vitamin C? Fruits (especially citrus), vegetables
What are nonessential amino acids? Can be made in the body
What is an antioxidant? Compounds that protect cells from damage from free radicals (unstable molecules)
