Reading STAAR Dictionary

| affix | letters added to the beginning or ending of a word to change its meaning |
| alliteration | the repetition of same starting sound |
| author's purpose | why an author writes |
| autobiography | a story about someone's life written by that person |
| biography | a story about someone's life written by an author |
| cast | a group of actors |
| cause | the "why" happens first |
| climax | the most important part of a story (heart) |
| conclusion | the final event in a story |
| conflict | main problem of the story |
| dialogue | what is being spoken |
| drama | a work meant to be performed on stage |
| effect | "what happens" -happens 2nd |
| fact | can be measured, observed, verified an expert |
| falling action | events in the story that happen after the climax |
| fantasy | a genre that has magical elements |
| first person narrator | a person in the story who is telling it |
| free verse poetry | no rhyme or rhythm-just sounds like talking |
| genre | a type of literature |
| historical fiction | a story that is set in the past, but it is fiction |
| illustration | picture or image |
| inference | a decision based on text evidence or our knowledge |
| introduction | the beginning of the story, where we learn the characters and the problem |
| line break | empty space between lines of poetry |
| lyrical poetry | follows a pattern or plan/has a song like feel |
| metaphor | compares two unlike things WITHOUT using like/as |
| narrator | the person telling the story |
| non-fiction | informational text that is true |
| onomapoeia | the use of words that imitate the words the describe |
| opinion | a thought or feeling, prediction, contains the word "should" or " ought" |
| playwright | the author of a play or drama |
| plot | the events that make up the story |
| poetry | a type of literature that has stanzas, line breaks meter/rhythm, and or rhyme |
| realistic fiction | a story that is fiction, but it could happen in real life |
| repetition | words or phrases that are repeated |
| resolution | how the story is ended, tied up |
| rhyme scheme | pattern of rhyming in a poem |
| rhythm/ meter | beat of the poem |
| rising action | events in the story before the climax |
| scene | a small section of a play |
| setting | where and when the story takes place |
| simile | compares 2 unlike things using like/ as |
| stage directions | tells feelings, settings, or actions in a play (written in italics and inside parentheses) |
| stanza | groups of lines in poetry, like a paragraph |
| theme | the overall message/ life lesson/ moral of the story |
| third person narrator | a person outside the story is telling it |
| analyze | to break something down to study it |
| benefit | good or helpful result or effect |
| clarify | to make something clearer by using clues to determine the meaning |
| collaborate | to work together, cooperatively, to create something |
| compare | to find similarities to among things |
| comprehend | to understand something and to figure out its meaning |
| concern | to worry |
| contrast | to find differences among things |
| contribute | to add or to give to something |
| demonstrate | to show how to do something clearly |
| describe | to tell about something with facts and details |
