| Personification | Figure of Speech in which human qualities are given to an object, animal, or idea. |
| Author’s Perspective | Unique combination of values, beliefs, and ideas that influences the way an author looks at things |
| Analogy | Point-by-point comparison between two things that are alike in some respect. Often used in nonfiction to explain unfamiliar subjects or ideas to familiar ones. |
| Allusion | An indirect reference to a famous person, place, event, or literary work. |
| Antagonist | A character in opposition to the main character, usually the source of conflict for the main character |
| Protagonist | The main character in the story who is involved in the central conflict and often changes or faces a difficult decision over the course of the story |
| Archetype | A pattern in literature that is found in a variety of works from different cultures throughout time. This could be a plot, character, an image, or a setting. |
| Aside | In a drama, an aside is a short speech directed to the audience, or another character, that is not heard by other characters on stage. |
| Autobiography | A writer’s account of his/her life. Usually in first person and focuses on the author’s entire life. |
| Memoir | Focuses on a significant event or events in an author’s life; does not include the author’s entire life |
