Terms to help you better analyze a poem

Rhyme words with the same ending sound
Rhyme Scheme rhyming patterns of lines in a poem
Rhythm the beat and flow of a poem
Repetition words and lines repeated in a poem
Lines a row of text in a poem
Stanza a group of lines in a poem
Alliteration a sentence or phrase where the majority of the words start with the same sound
Onomatopoeia words that make a sound
Simile comparing two unlike things using the words "like" or "as"
Metaphor comparing two unlike things using the words "is" or "was"
Personification giving human qualities to things that are not human
Hyperbole extreme exaggeration to make a point
Idiom a word or phrase that means something different from the literal meaning
Free Verse a poem that is free of rules and patterns
Haiku a 3-line poem that uses a certain number of syllables in each line, shows appreciation for nature, originated from Japan
Limerick a five line poem that uses a specific rhyme scheme and number of syllables in each line
Bio-poem a poem that tells information about a person
Ode a lyric poem in the form of an address to a particular subject, often elevated in style or manner
Symbolism the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities.
Imagery visually descriptive or figurative language, especially in a literary work.
