Temp. and Kinetic
7th Grade Unit 12
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Kinetic Energy | a form of energy that an object or a particle has by reason of its motion |
| Particles | any basic unit of matter and energy |
| Absolute Zero | the lowest possible temperature, where all molecular motion stops and there is essentially no heat energy left |
| Temperature | a measure of how hot or cold something is |
| Thermal Expansion | when a material increases in size (length, area, or volume) due to an increase in temperature, as the molecules within it move faster and take up more space |
| Kelvin Scale | unit for measuring temperature. The kelvin scale is based on absolute zero, the coldest possible measurement, so there is no such thing as a negative temperature |
| Expand | become or make larger or more extensive |
| Contract | become smaller or to cause something to become smaller |
| Celsius | a scale for measuring temperature, in which water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100 degrees |
| Fahrenheit | a scale for measuring temperature, in which water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees |
| Thermometer | an instrument that measures temperature |
