Human Body-Science

The skeletal, respiratory, and nervous system

TermDefinition
function of respiratory system to bring oxygen into the body, and to remove carbon dioxide and water
gas exchange in alveoli oxygen diffuses out of alveoli into the blood, carbon dioxide diffuses out of blood and into alveoli to be released by the lungs
how does breathing work? the diaphragm pushes down and relaxes, allowing for more or less room, letting you breathe
breathing vs respiration breathing is the process inhaling and exhaling gases between the cells and environment, respiration is a chemical process that takes place inside the cell that exchanges carbon dioxide and oxegen
function of temporal lobe managing your emotions, processing information from your senses, storing and retrieving memories, and understanding language.
function of frontal lobe voluntary movement, expressive language and higher level thinking, (last to develop)
function of parietal lobe sense of touch and assembles input from your other senses into a form you can use
function of occipital lobe visual perception, color, form and motion
how does the nervous system work neurons transmit signals throughout your body, carrying info from your brain, allowing for a reaction to your environment, moving, feeling, thinking, etc
CNS vs PNS The Central Nervous System contains your brain and spinal cord and communicates with the body. the Parietal Nervous System is nerves and neurons communicating with the rest of the body.
how neurons send signals from brain to action neurons send neurotransmitters across a tiny space in order to send signals from the brain allowing for actions.
Long bone long bone-femur/humerus, supportive
function of the skeletal system provides support for the body, protects internal organs from damage, produces red and white blood cells
Ball and socket joint ball+socket joint-shoulder+hip-wide range of motion
levels of organization in body cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism
cell body basic building block of all living things
tissue a group of connective cells that have a similar function
organ structure that contains two or more different tissues that work together to do the same job (epithelial, muscle, nervous and connective tissues
organ system a group of organs that work together to carry out a complex function (digestive system, nervous system etc).
organism any living thing that functions as an individual
Short bone short bone-small movements, ankle/wrist
irregular bone irregular bone-fill extra space, vertebrae/pelvis/mandable
flat bone flat bone-protects helps w movements scapula/ribs/sternum
hinge joint hinge joint-elbow+knee-low range of motion
gliding joint-bones slide over each other-wrist and ankle gliding joint-bones slide over each other-wrist and ankle

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
