Waves
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| wave | a repeating disturbance that transfers energy through matter or space |
| longitudinal wave | The particles move parallel to the direction of energy transport |
| wavelength | Length of one wave cycle |
| amplitude | The maximum extent of a vibration |
| frequency | The number of waves passing a point each second |
| mediums | solids, liquids, gasses, vacuum |
| sound wave speed in different mediums | slowest in a vacuum, fastest in a solid |
| Electromagnetic wave speed in different mediums | fastest in a vacuum, slowest in a solid |
| crest (part of a wave) | the highest point of a wave |
| trough (part of a wave) | the lowest point of a wave |
| Electromagnetic waves | transverse waves that do NOT require a medium |
| Electromagnetic spectrum | a range of electromagnetic radiation |
| transparent | Matter that allows almost all the light to pass through |
| translucent | Matter that allows some light to pass through |
| opaque | Matter that does not let any light pass through it |
| refraction | The bending, or changing direction of light as it changes speed in a new medium |
| reflection | is when light bounces off a surface |
| absorption | when light transfers its energy to matter and the added energy increases the temperature of matter |
