Example of rest Refraining from running after pulling a muscle
What does I in PRICE stand for? Ice - Apply ice to reduce swelling pain
Example of ice Applying ice pack to swollen knee after falling on it
What does the C in PRICE stand for? Compression - use compression to minimize swelling
Example of compression Wrapping a strained wrist with an elastic band
What does E stand for? Elevation - elevate the injured area to reduce swelling
Example of elevation Propping up a sprained ankle with pillows
What does the H in HOPS stand for? History - Gather information on how the injury occured
Example of history Asking the athlete how they twisted their knee during the game
What does the O in HOPS stand for? Observation - look for signs of injury, such as swelling or deformity
Example of observation Noticing bruising or swelling around an injured elbow
What does the P in HOPS stand for? Palpation - feel the injured area to identify pain points and abnormalities
Example of palpation Gently pressing on a sore shoulder to locate tender spots
What does the S in HOPS stand for? Special tests - perform specific tests to assess the extent of the injury
Example of special tests Conducting a ligament stability test on an injured knee to check for damage
