What are bloodborne pathogens? Microorganisms that may cause disease if exposed
How can you be exposed to bloodborne pathogens? Human blood, semen, vaginal secretion, cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid
What are the bloodborne diseases? HBV, hepatitis C, HIV, AIDS
What is hepatitis C? Acute and chronic liver disease
Signs of Hepatitis C? Jaundice, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue, muscle/joint pain, dark urine
Prevention of Hepatitis C? Safe practice during sex and do not share items where blood may have been exposed
Hepatitis C management? Get tested if exposed and medication regimen
What is HIV? Virus invading healthy cells and making it difficult to overcome
Signs if HIV? Faituge, weight loss, muscle/joint pain, affected glands, night sweats, fever
HIV and AIDS prevention? Good hygiene, avoid high risk activities, and education
Management of HIV? Little development in area
What is AIDS? Breakdown of immune system leaving high risk of other infections
Signs of AIDS? Anything and everything
Management of AIDS? Little development in this area
What should you use when dealing with blood? Gloves and other protective equipment
How do you dispose of contaminated items? Biohazard bags
Sharps container Use proper sharps containers for needles and other sharp objects
