Shock is... Always possible with any injury or emergency situation
What should you do when someone goes in shock? Continue to monitor and recognize signs/symptoms
What are the signs/symptoms of shock Low blood pressure, rapid weak pulse, becomes drowsy or unconscious, shallow and rapid breathing, pale, cool, clammy skin, loss of body function
What is secondary survey? Can be completed after life-threatening injury has been ruled out
On/off field inspection Usually performed by ATC or physician, but a coach in some cases
Vital signs Check pulse, breathing, blood pressure, temperature, skin condition, pupils, sensory, and motor control.
history questions, inspections, and palpatations Assess seriousness of injury, plan of care, call 911 or wait, and what is next
Emergency action plan (EAP) Specific to each sport
What might an EAP include for a specific sport? Where is the AED? Who and what equipment will be there?
What does an EAP include? Procedure/policy for equipment removal, familiar with 911 format, gates/keys, annual meetings/designated person for transportation (injury consent), healthcare/contact records
On-site injury assessment What is done prior to an acting decision can be made and is quick and thorough
Primary survey rule out life-threatening problems
Secondary survey Specific look into the injury
