Sound Waves
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Medium | The material through which a wave travels. |
| Crest | The highest part of the transverse wave. |
| Equilibrium | The position before the wave moves (resting point) |
| Wavelength | The distance between two corresponding parts of a wave (crest to crest OR trough to trough). |
| Amplitude | The height of a transverse wave from the center to the crest or trough. Also measures the loudness or softness of a sound |
| Rarefaction | The part of the longitudinal wave where the particles of the medium are far apart. |
| Compression | The part of the longitudinal wave where the particles of the medium are close together. |
| Trough | The lowest part of the transverse wave. |
| Transverse Wave | A wave that moves the medium perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels (up and down OR side to side). |
| Longitudinal Wave | A wave that moves the medium in a direction parallel to the direction in which the wave travels (back and forth). |
| Wave | A transfer of energy through a medium from one point to another |
| Frequency | The number of complete waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time. |
| Pitch | The highness or lowness of sound |
| Sound | A disturbance that travels through a medium as a longitudinal wave (vibration) |
| Vibrations | Periodic back-and-forth motion of particles |
| Energy | The ability to do work or cause change |
| Tone | Sound that can be recognized by its regualrity of vibration |
| Echo | Sound waves that reflect off a surface |
| Volume | Measures the loudness or softness of a sound |
