Concluding Paragraph The final paragraph in an essay that restates the thesis and summarizes the essay’s key ideas
Introductory Paragraph The first paragraph in an essay that introduces the essay topic and states the thesis (main idea)
Line In a poem, a group of words arranged in a row
Line Break In a poem, the end of one line and the start of the next
Speaker The narrator of a poem
Stanza In a poem, a group of lines that are set off from other groups by a space
Stanza Break In a poem, the end of one stanza and the start of the next
Tone The speaker’s attitude toward a topic; in a nonfiction text, this may be the author’s attitude
Mood The reader's attitude or feeling toward a topic
Accustomed used to, familiar with
Conceivable can be imagined or believed
Defy to openly resist or refuse to obey
Diminish to make or become less in size or importance
Disquiet a feeling of anxiety or worry; lack of peace
Exempt free from having to follow a rule that others must
Haste too much speed; great hurry
