Periodic Table

QuestionAnswer
Protons Positive charge - inside the nucleus.
Neutrons Neutral charge - inside the nucleus.
Electrons Negative charge - outside the nucleus "Electron cloud"
Atomic Number The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which determines the chemical properties of an element and its place in the periodic table.
Atomic Mass The number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.
Group on the periodic table Column on the periodic table. Elements have same number of valence electrons (outermost energy level). Elements in the same column have similar physical and chemical properties.
Period (family) on the periodic table Row on the periodic table. Elements in the same row have the same number of electron shells. (energy levels)
Metals Elements on the left side of the periodic table. Most abundant. Lustrous (shiny) and malleable (able to shape). Good conductor of heat and electricity.
Non Metals Elements on the right side of the periodic table. Dull and brittle. Poor conductors of heat and electricity.
Metalloids Elements in between metals and nonmetals on the stair-step line. Have both metallic and nonmetallic properties and are often used as semiconductors.
Isotopes Atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons and electrons but have different number of neutrons, and therefore have different atomic masses but still have the same chemical properties.
Ions When an atom loses or gains one or more electrons, it acquires a net electrical charge (oxidation number).
Atomic number 92 Elements with atomic numbers greater than 92 are not found in measurable quantities naturally on Earth, meaning they are only produced artificially in laboratories.
Noble gases Nonmetals that are stable and nonreactive due to having 8 electrons in their outer shell (filled). Ex: Neon

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
