Body Systems

QuestionAnswer
Cell The smallest unit of life; every organism is made up of cells.
Tissue A group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function.
Organ A structure composed of different tissues that work together to carry out a specific task (e.g., the heart).
Organ System A group of organs that work together to perform one or more functions (e.g., the digestive system).
Organism A single living thing.
Hierarchical Organization The arrangement of living things from the smallest units (cells) to the largest systems (organ systems).
Circulatory System Transports blood, oxygen, nutrients, and waste products throughout the body. Main components include the heart, blood, and blood vessels.
Respiratory System Responsible for breathing and gas exchange, bringing oxygen into the body and removing carbon dioxide. Key parts include the lungs, trachea, and diaphragm.
Skeletal System Provides the framework for the body, supports and protects internal organs, and works with muscles to enable movement. It consists of bones and cartilage.
Muscular System Enables movement of the body through muscle contraction. It includes skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles.
Digestive System Breaks down food into nutrients the body can absorb and expels waste. Major organs include the mouth, stomach, intestines, liver, and pancreas.
Urinary System Removes waste products from the blood and regulates water and salt balance by producing urine. Key organs are the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra.
Reproductive System Responsible for producing offspring. Involves different organs in males and females that work together for reproduction.
Integumentary System Serves as the body's first line of defense and helps regulate temperature. It includes the skin, hair, nails, and various glands.
Nervous System Controls and coordinates body activities by transmitting signals throughout the body. It is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
Immune System Defends the body against infections and diseases through cells, tissues, and organs like lymph nodes and white blood cells.
Endocrine System Regulates body functions by releasing hormones into the bloodstream. It includes glands such as the thyroid, pancreas, and adrenal glands.
Hormone A chemical messenger produced by endocrine glands that helps regulate body functions.
Homeostasis The process by which the body maintains a stable internal environment despite changes in the external environment.
