Unit 12 24-25
Body Systems
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Cell | The smallest unit of life; every organism is made up of cells. |
| Tissue | A group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function. |
| Organ | A structure composed of different tissues that work together to carry out a specific task (e.g., the heart). |
| Organ System | A group of organs that work together to perform one or more functions (e.g., the digestive system). |
| Organism | A single living thing. |
| Hierarchical Organization | The arrangement of living things from the smallest units (cells) to the largest systems (organ systems). |
| Circulatory System | Transports blood, oxygen, nutrients, and waste products throughout the body. Main components include the heart, blood, and blood vessels. |
| Respiratory System | Responsible for breathing and gas exchange, bringing oxygen into the body and removing carbon dioxide. Key parts include the lungs, trachea, and diaphragm. |
| Skeletal System | Provides the framework for the body, supports and protects internal organs, and works with muscles to enable movement. It consists of bones and cartilage. |
| Muscular System | Enables movement of the body through muscle contraction. It includes skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles. |
| Digestive System | Breaks down food into nutrients the body can absorb and expels waste. Major organs include the mouth, stomach, intestines, liver, and pancreas. |
| Urinary System | Removes waste products from the blood and regulates water and salt balance by producing urine. Key organs are the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra. |
| Reproductive System | Responsible for producing offspring. Involves different organs in males and females that work together for reproduction. |
| Integumentary System | Serves as the body's first line of defense and helps regulate temperature. It includes the skin, hair, nails, and various glands. |
| Nervous System | Controls and coordinates body activities by transmitting signals throughout the body. It is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. |
| Immune System | Defends the body against infections and diseases through cells, tissues, and organs like lymph nodes and white blood cells. |
| Endocrine System | Regulates body functions by releasing hormones into the bloodstream. It includes glands such as the thyroid, pancreas, and adrenal glands. |
| Hormone | A chemical messenger produced by endocrine glands that helps regulate body functions. |
| Homeostasis | The process by which the body maintains a stable internal environment despite changes in the external environment. |
