RAD465 XRAY TUBE

RAD465 Image Prod/QA

TermDefinition
AC SUPPLY supplies circuit with 220-2040V; alternating current
MASTER WALL SWITCH connection btwn external power and xray unit
FUSES stops connection in the event a hazard develops in the xray circuit (power surge/backfire)
LINE VOLTAGE COMPENSATOR adjusts # of turns available on the autotransformer; makes small adjustments to get exactly 220V
LINE VOLTAGE METER measures how much voltage is coming in; need precisely 220V so kVp is not variable
AUTOTRANSFORMER single coil; runs on self-induction; makes minor adjustments; based on kV selection
MAJOR/MINOR KVP SELECTORS corresponds to kV selections minor = 1s major = 10s
PRE-READING KV METER provides estimated kV to be used on secondary side
EXPOSURE SWITCH single-blade switch that closes circuit btwn auto & step up transformer when exposure button is pushed; dead-man switch
EXPOSURE TIMER CIRCUIT controls duration of exposure (timer)
5 TYPES OF EXPOSURE TIMERS Mechanical - no longer used Synchronous - works in multiples of 60 Electronic - most complex & accurate mAs timer - uses highest & safest mA with shortest time AEC - ionization chambers btwn pt and the detector
mA SELECTOR regulates amperage; how many electrons we boil off; 3-6amps
FOCAL SPOT SELECTOR selects the size of the filament; small (0.1-1.0mm) vs. large (0.3-2.0mm)based on mA selected
STEP DOWN TRANSFORMER aka filament transformer; mutual induction; steps down voltage to 8-12V
FILAMENT CIRCUIT controls the # of electrons that are boiled off
STEP UP TRANSFORMER steps up voltage to kilovoltage! mutual induction separates xray circuit into primary and secondary side
Formulas for turns ratio, voltage, current Transformer Law(voltage): Ts/Tp = Vs/Vp Turns ratio:Ts/Tp Current: Ts/Tp = Ip/Is
TURNS RATIO > 1 step-up transformer
TURNS RATIO < 1 step-down transformer
DIODES FOR RECTIFICATION changes alternating current to direct current; at the 0 tap point; gives the mA meter an accurate current
2 DIODES v. 4 DIODES 2 will nullify negative cycle 4 will flip negative into positive
mA METER measures milliAmps / # of electrons located at 0 tap point(midpoint) of the secondary side connected to ground to safely place on control panel uses 4 rectifiers to have direct current
PRIMARY/LOW VOLTAGE SIDE pre-step-up transformer contains most of the elements available on the control panel except for the mA meter
SECONDARY/ HIGH VOLTAGE SIDE post-step-up transformer contains the mA meter & rectifiers
ANODE A+ positive side of the xray tube
CATHODE C- negative side of the xray tube

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
