Cells & Cell theory

Cells and Cell Theor

QuestionDefinition
Cell the smallest part of any living thing
cell theory widely accepted explanation that explains the relationship between cells and living things
cell membrane forms the outer boundary of the cell and allows only certain materials to move into or out of the cell
Cytoplasm a gel-like structure inside the cell; contains water and nutrients for the cell
Nucleus directs the activity of a cell; contains chromosomes with the DNA
nuclear membrane separates the nucleus from the cytoplasm
Mitochondria breaks down food and releases energy to the cell
Vacuole storage areas for the cell
cell wall provides structure to the plant cell
Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll that makes food for the plant cell
Autotroph an organism that can produce its own food using light, water, carbon dioxide, or other chemicals; they are also called producers.
vascular plants plants that have vascular tissue which helps to provide strength and support to the plant
nonvascular plants plants that do not have vascular tissue to help support the plant or transport materials throughout the plant
seedless vascular plants vascular plants which reproduce by making spores
tissue a group of cells working together to perform a similar function
organ a group of tissue working together to perform a similar function
organ system a group of organs working together to perform a similar function
organism a group of organ systems working together to perform a similar function
homeostasis an organism's ability to maintain internal stability to help compensate for changes in the environment; balance or equilibrium in the body
heterotroph an organism that cannot produce its own food, instead gets its food and nutrition from other sources
protist an organism that lives in moist or wet places, can be single-celled organisms or multi-celled organisms
single-celled organism an organism made up of only one cell; also known as unicellular
prokaryotic cells cells that do not have a nucleus or other organelles such as bacteria
eukaryotic cells cells that have a nucleus and other organelles and are surrounded by a cellular membrane
binary fission reproduction where the organism splits into two identical halves
Volvox a single-celled protist that lives in colonies and makes its own food by photosynthesis
Euglena a single-celled protist that contains an eyespot, moves by flagella, and makes its own food by photosynthesis
Amoeba a single-celled protist that lives by ingesting other organisms and moves by using its cytoplasm
Paramecium a single-celled protist that lives by ingesting other organisms and moves by hairlike projections called cilia

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
