Parasuicide nonfatal suicide attempts
Death Seeker they have a clear and sole desire to end their life
Death Initiators they have a clear intent to end their life, but believe that death is already under way and they are simply hastening the process Common in sick or elderly people
Death Ignorers those who believe that death is a self inflicted death is a trade for a happier existence; may believe that ending their current life will not "actually kill them"
Death Darers those with ambivalence or mixed feelings about ending their life and death in general
Sub-intentional Deaths deaths that involve indirect, impartial, or unconscious human roles EX: accidental drug overdose
Self-Injury the direct and deliberate destruction of one's body without the intent to die
Retrospective Analysis a sort of psychological autopsy in which researchers piece together data from a suicide victim's past
Common Suicide Triggers stressful/traumatic events, mood changes, alcohol or drug use, psychological disorders, modeling
Hopelessness a pessimistic belief that one's circumstances will never change
Dichotomous Thinking viewing problems and situations in black and white
Thanatos opposes the life instinct
Egoistic Suicides carried out by people who society have little or no control over; people who lack belonging
Altruistic Suicides carried out by people who are well-integrated into society and sacrifice their life for its well-being
Anomic Suicides carried out by people who feel their social structure or environment has failed them
Anomie when a failed social structure leaves people without a sense of belonging
Interpersonal Theory of Suicide developed by Thomas Joiner, asserts that people will be inclined to pursue suicide if they feel they're burdensome, lack belonging, and have the capability to complete the act
4 Steps of Crisis Intervention 1) Establish + relationship 2) Clarify problem 3) Assess suicide risk 4) Assess caller's resources 5) Form plan
