Inheritance and Variation

TermDefinition
variation the differences between the individuals in a species or between groups of organisms of the same species.
adaptation a characteristic of an organism that helps it to survive and reproduce in its environment
dominant trait a characteristic that is expressed (shown) when one allele is inherited
recessive trait a characteristic that is expressed (shown) only when two alleles are inherited
allele one of two ore more forms of a gene, located at a specific position on a chromosome
gene the basic unit of heredity, passed from parent to child; found at a specific position on a chromosome
genotype the genetic makeup of an organism; the combination of alleles present in the DNA of an individual organism
phenotype the observable physical properties of an organism, including appearance, development, and behavior
heterozygous having two different versions of a gene (allele), inherited from each parent
homozygous having the same version of a gene (allele) from both parents
