Genetics Vocabulary
Genetics & Heredity
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Chromosome | A threadlike structure that contains thousands of genes |
| Gene | A unit of heredity that is transferred from parent to offspring |
| Allele | A form of a gene pair. For example, in the genotype Aa, A is one allele and a is the other |
| Trait | A characteristic determined by genes |
| Heredity | The study of the patterns of genetic inheritance. |
| Genotype | Set of genes that determine a trait (Aa, AA, aa) |
| Phenotype | Observable physical traits of an organism (example: height, hair color, eye color) |
| Heterozygous | One dominant and one recessive allele is present in an individual (Aa) |
| Homozygous | Two dominant or two recessive alleles are present in an individual (AA or aa) - also called “Purebred” |
| Dominant Trait | A trait that is expressed even if only one copy of the allele is present |
| Recessive Trait | A trait that is expressed if only two copies of the allele are present |
| Purebred | Offspring that result in the same phenotype as their parents |
| Hybrid | Offspring from parents that differ in genetically determined traits |
| Inherits | The process by which genetic information is passed from parent to offspring |
| Offspring | The product of the reproductive process. |
| Generations | The individuals produced at each stage of reproduction |
| Budding | A form of asexual reproduction where a new individual grows directly on the parent until fully developed, then releases. |
| Asexual reproduction | Reproduction in which there is only one parent and the offspring is a clone of the parent. |
| Sexual reproduction | Reproduction that involves the fertilization of an egg cell by a sperm cell. There are always two gametes (parents) who pass on their traits to the offspring. |
| Fertilization | The union of 2 gametes to form a zygote in sexual reproduction. |
| Mutations | Any change in the DNA sequence of a cell. May be caused by random chance or environmental conditions. |
| Constant variables | All of the things that you keep the same during an experiment. |
| Dependent variable | The things that you measure during or after an experiment because they are changing. |
| Independent variable | The one thing that you change before (or at the beginning) of an experiment. |
| Punnett Square | A tool used to show the possible genetic outcomes of a cross between 2 organisms for a specific genetic trait. |
| Karyotype | An image of all the chromosomes in a cell. |
