Academic Vocabulary for ARC / English 096

TermDefinition
The Berlin Wall A concrete barrier that divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989, symbolizing the Cold War division.
The Iron Curtain A metaphorical barrier separating Eastern and Western Europe during the Cold War.
relevant Closely connected to the topic or matter at hand.
major Important, serious, or significant.
minor Less important or smaller in degree.
specific Clearly defined or identified; a single piece of information
general Relating to most people or things; not specific.
category A group or class of things with shared characteristics.
draft A preliminary version of a document.
trade The exchange of goods or services between people or countries.
conventional warfare Traditional, non-nuclear military conflict.
nuclear warfare Armed conflict involving the use of nuclear weapons.
mutually assured destruction (MAD) A doctrine where the use of nuclear weapons would result in total destruction for both sides.
guerrilla warfare A form of irregular warfare using small, mobile groups to fight larger traditional forces.
chemical weapons Weapons that use chemicals to harm or kill people.
sufficient Enough to meet a need or requirement.
context The circumstances surrounding a particular event or situation.
iconic Widely recognized and well-established as representative of something significant.
