| psychology | study of behavior and the mental process. The mental process is the steps the mind takes to think, feel, etc., while behavior is just simply how one acts. |
| behavior | any action that people can observe or measure. |
| cognitive activities | mental tasks that require attention, focus and concentration. |
| theory | a principle or body of interrelated principles that purports to explain or predict a number of interrelated phenomena |
| principle | fundamental rule, standard, or precept, especially in matters of morality or personal conduct. |
| psychiatrist | a medical doctor (an M.D. or D.O.) who specializes in mental health, including substance use disorders. |
| basic research | theory-driven, hypothesis-testing science driven by a quest for fundamental understanding. |
| introspection | looking within to learn about ourselves |
| structuralism | based on the discovery of the basic elements of consciousness. |
| psychoanalysis | emphasizes the importance of unconscious motives and internal conflicts in determining human behavior |
| behaviorism | the scientific study of observable behavior |
| Gestalt psychology | based on the idea that our perceptions of objects are more than the sums of their parts. |
| biological perspective | emphasizes the influence of biology on behavior |
| evolutionary perspective | focuses on the evolution of behavior and mental processes; |
| cognitive perspective | emphasizes the role that thoughts play in determining behavior |
| humanistic perspective | stresses the human capacity for self-fulfillment |
| psychoanalytic | stresses the influence of unconscious forces on human behavior |
| perspective | the ability to view objects, events, and ideas in realistic proportions and relationships |
| learning perspective | emphasizes the effects of experience on human behavior |
| sociocultural perspective | study the influences of ethnicity, gender, culture, and socio-economic status on behavior and mental processes |
