Rad 100 Midterm

For the midterm for intro to the radiology externship experience

QuestionAnswer
What does angling the CR 15 degrees caudal mean? Caudal means away from the head of the patient. So in this case, the CR would be angled 15 degrees toward the feet of the patient.
What does proximal mean in radiographic terms? Proximal means: closer to the trunk of the body.
What are the two classifications of the human skeleton? Describe each. the AXIAL skeleton refers to the bones along the central axis of the body (skull, vertebral column, etc.). The APPENDICULAR skeleton refers to the bones of the upper and lower limbs, as well as shoulder and pelvic girdles.
How is the trendelenburg position described? The patient is lying down with their head angled lower than their feet.
How is the supine position described? The patient is lying down on their back in the anatomical position.
How is the recumbent position described? The patient is lying down in any position.
What does distal mean in radiographic terms? Distal means: further away from the trunk of the body.
How is the midsaggital plane described? The midsaggital plane is a plane separating the body into equal left and right parts. Among other reasons, it is useful in determining aspects of vertical alignment.
What is the purpose of positioning landmarks in radiographic imaging? Positioning landmarks are used to center the image receptor, making sure that all essential anatomy is included on the projection.
Describe a lateral hand radiograph A lateral hand radiograph is viewing a hand laterally. Among the typical elements of importance (viewing any dislocation, fracture, abnormality), this view in particular is helpful in identifying any foreign bodies.
What kVp adjustment would need to be made on a large plaster cast? An increase of 8-10 kVp
What is AEC and how does it help patients? AEC stands for Automatic exposure control. It terminates the exposure once a set amount of radiation or time is reached. This helps lessen the amount of exposure necessary to achieve a diagnostically efficient image.
When would a grid be used in radiography and why? A grid would be used for an imaging procedure that would involve a thicker part of a patient's anatomy (ex: chest). It is used to absorb the scatter of radiation to increase image contrast.
What is the component of the x-ray system that captures the image? Image Receptor
Identify the type of radiographic table that can tilt. Tilting Radiographic/Fluoroscopic Table
Where would you center the CR for a routine PA hand procedure? At the third metacarpophalangeal joint
What body movement could be described as "conelike sequential movement." circumduction
In a hypersthenic patient, how could the image receptor be oriented for chest imaging and why? The image receptor could be oriented in landscape. This would allow the lateral portions of the patient's chest to be included in the image.
