| Motivation | a need or desire that energizes and directs behavior |
| Instinct | a complex behavior that is rigidly patterned throughout a species and is unlearned |
| Instinct theory | the concept that all humans are evolutionary designed in a way that helps them survive |
| Drive-reduction theory | the idea that a psychological need creates an aroused state that motivates an organism to satisfy the need |
| Arousal theory | people are driven to perform actions in order to maintain an optimum level of physiological arousal |
| Physiological need | a basic bodily function |
| Incentive | a positive or negative environment stimulus that motivates behavior |
| Homeostasis | a tendency to maintain a balanced or constant internal state |
| Yerkes-Dodson law | the principle that performance increases with arousal only up to a point beyond which performance decreases |
| Hierarchy of needs | Maslow's pyramid of human needs beginning at the base with physiological needs that must first be satisfied before higher level safety needs and then psychological needs become active |
| Maslow's pyramid | self-transcendence needs, self-actualization needs, esteem needs, belonging and love needs, safety needs, psychological needs |
| Self-transcendence | need to find meaning and identity beyond the self |
| Self-actualization | need to live up to our fullest potential |
| Esteem needs | need for self-esteem, achievement, competence and independence |
| Belonging and love needs | need to love and be loved, to be long and be accepted |
| Safety needs | need to feel that the world is organized and predictable |
| Physiological needs | need to satisfy hunger and thirst |
