cell the smallest unit that can live on its own and that makes up all living organisms; microscopic
tissue a group of cells that possess a similar structure and perform a specific function
organ a part of the body that is made up of cells and tissues that perform a specific function; heart, lungs, stomach
organ system a group of organs that work together to perform one or more functions
circulatory system supplies oxygen and nutrients to the whole body and removes waste through blood
digestive system breaks down food and liquids into nutrients the body can use
endocrine system a group of glands and organs that produce and release hormones into the bloodstream
immune system cells, tissues, organs, and the substances they make that helps the body fight infections and other diseases
integumentary system the body's outer layer; protects the body from injury, infection, and the sun, and helps regulate body temperature
respiratory system takes up oxygen from the air we breathe and removes the unwanted carbon dioxide; gas exchange
reproductive system produces gametes (sperm and eggs) and supports the development of offspring
urinary system filters the blood, removing waste and excess water as urine
skeletal system gives the body its shape, protects organs, and allows for movement
muscular system allows the body to move, maintain posture, and circulate blood
nervous system a network of nerves and nerve cells that sends signals between the brain and the body
