Cellular Processes

Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration

Definition/AnswerVocabulary/ Science Term
Photosynthesis The process in which an organism makes its own food using sunlight.
Cellular Respiration The process in which an organism breakers down food/sugar/glucose to produce energy.
Fermentation The process in which an organism releases energy from food/sugar/glucose without using oxygen.
Aerobic Respiration A type of cellular respiration. The process of releasing energy from food/sugar/glucose using/requires/needs oxygen.
Anaerobic Respiration A type of cellular respiration and relates to fermentation. The process of releasing energy from food/sugar/glucose without/does not require/ needs no oxygen.
Lactic Acid Fermentation A type of fermentation. The releasing energy from food/sugar/glucose without using energy. Takes place in your muscle cells.
Alcoholic Fermentation A type of fermentation. The releasing energy from food/sugar/glucose without using energy. Takes place in yeast and bacteria used to make bread dough rise and make alcohol.
Mitochindria An organelle found in autotrophs and heterotrophs cells. It is called the "powerhouse of a cell". It is involved in the second stage of cellular respiration.
Cytoplasm An organelle found in cells. It is called the "powerhouse of a cell". It is involved in the first stage of cellular respiration.
Chloroplast An organelle found in autotrophs cells. It's the location where photosynthesis takes place.
Autotrophs Organisms that make their own food by photosynthesis. Includes all plants and some bacteria and protists.
Heterotrophs Organisms that can't/can not make their own food. They must eat or consume another organisms. Includes animals, fungi, & some bacteria protists.
Chlorophyll The green pigment found in plants and photosynthetic organisms that captures and traps sunlight.
Photosynthesis Equation Sunlight + H2O + CO2 → C6H12O6 + O2 Sunlight + water + carbon dioxide → glucose + oxygen
Cellular Respiration Equation C6H12O6 + O2 → ATP + H2O + CO2 glucose + oxygen → energy + water + carbon dioxide
Lactic Acid Equation glucose —> lactic acid + carbon dioxide + energy
Alcoholic Fementation Equation glucose —> alcohol + carbon dioxide + energy
Reactants The substances, elements, or compounds found on the left side of an arrow in a chemical equation.
Products The substances, elements, or compounds found on the right side of an arrow in a chemical equation.
Organelles Mini- or tny organs found in the cells of a organism.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
