| What is fish a source of? | Fish are a super source of protein and really benefit the human diet. |
| Name a fish species that is very popular and has almost disappeared. | Sadly, some fish species are so popular. like North Sea cod, that they have almost disappeared from our seas due to overfishing. |
| What does a fishing method depend on? | Fish can be caught or reared - the fishing method used depends on the type of fish and where it's found. |
| What is trawling? | Trawling is a very common method of fishing trawlers are fishing boats that catch fish using nets. Large trawlers may process fish on-board (factory trawlers). |
| What are the different methods of trawling? | There are different methods of trawling -some drag a net through the open sea, and others along the surface of the seabed (bottom trawling). |
| What is dredging? | Dredging is like bottom trawling but uses a metal 'basket' instead of a net. |
| What is fish farming? | Large numbers of fish are raised in tanks or enclosures in rivers and lakes or in cages in the sea. E.g. salmon, carp and trout. As with factory-farmed land animals, there is overcrowding - the fish are more likely to suffer from diseases. |
| What happens to the fish once they are caught and before they are brought to shore? | When the fish are caught they may be washed and gutted on the boats before they are brought to shore. Fish are chilled (packed with ice) or salted to prevent spoilage on the way to supermarkets and fishmongers. |
| What are the benefits of sustainable fishing? | Sustainable fishing preserves future fish stocks. |
| Why are people concerned about fishing methods? | There is concern over how fishing methods are damaging the environment. |
| Why is bottom trawling destructive? | Bottom trawling is destructive, e.g. the nets that drag across the seabed can destroy corals, which are a habitat for lots of marine life. Trawlers can also catch unwanted animals, like dolphins or turtles, in their nets. |
| What is overfishing and name an example of this. | Overfishing is when more fish are caught than can be replaced by natural reproduction. E.g. the demand for bluefin tuna to make sushi has led to overfishing. Bluefin tuna are now endangered (at risk of going extinct). |
| What is an alternative fishing method? | Longline fishing uses a fishing line with baited hooks secured between two buoys. Fewer fish are caught and there is less chance of catching unwanted fish. |
| How can governments conserve fish stocks? | Fishing quotes - Quotas set by governments help endangered species of fish. They limit the amount and sizes of fish that can be caught. |
| What is another way governments conserve fish stocks? | Regulating net size - Holes in fishing nets have to be a certain size, so that smaller, unwanted fish can escape. |
| What is sustainable fishing? | Sustainable fishing — we cod do batter... A sustainable method is one that doesn't damage the environment or use up finite resources. |
