GROWN FOOD
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is food provenance? | Food provenance is all about where your food originally comes from - it can be grown, reared or caught. |
| How are crops grown? | Crops are grown intensively or organically. |
| Give examples of grown food. | Grown food includes fruits, vegetables and cereals, e.g. wheat, rice, barley, oats, rye. |
| What are 2 methods of farming? | There are two methods of farming them which you need to know about -intensive farming and organic farming. |
| What is intensive farming? | Intensive farming uses chemicals to achieve maximum yields. |
| Why is it called intensive farming? | Intensive farming uses methods that will produce the highest possible yield (more food from the same area of land). |
| Describe the production in intensive farming. | Production is often large-scale, with huge areas all growing the same crop. |
| Why is large mechanical equipment used in intensive farming? | Large mechanical equipment is used to save time and cut down on production costs. |
| What is added to the soil and why? | Artificial (chemical) fertilisers are added to the soil to supply nutrients for crops to grow. |
| What is another name for intensive farming? | Intensive farming is also known as conventional farming. |
| What are pesticides and give 3 examples. | Pesticides are used. These are chemicals that control pests and protect crops and include insecticides, herbicides (weedkiller) and fungicides. |
| Why are people concerned about using pesticides? | Some people are concerned about using artificial fertilisers and pesticides. They can harm wildlife, damage the environment, e.g. by polluting rivers, and some think they have a harmful effect on human health too. |
| What type of methods does organic farming use? | Organic farming uses natural methods. |
| How is organic food grown? | Organic food is grown naturally without using artificial fertilisers and pesticides. This makes it more expensive to produce. Farmers add organic matter like manure and compost instead of artificial fertilisers. |
| What techniques are used in organic farming? | Techniques such as crop rotation (growing different crops) and leaving land fallow (growing nothing) are used to make sure the soil is fertile every year. |
| What other alternative methods might farmers use? | Introducing a pest's natural predators (e.g. ladybirds to eat aphids). Biological pesticides (e.g. certain fungi). Spraying crops with hot water. |
| What are the advantages and disadvantages of these alternative methods? | These alternatives are generally better for the environment, but can be more expensive and less effective than using chemical pesticides. |
| What are the advantages of organice farming? | It reduces the amount of chemical pesticides going onto the land, so it's less harmful to the environment. It appeals to consumers who are concerned about the use of artificial chemicals and their damage to the environment. |
| What are 2 disadvantges of organic farming? | Organic farming tends to produce a lower yield. There are higher production costs, which mean higher prices in supermarkets. |
| Why is organice farming more sustainable? | Fewer non-renewable resources are used than in intensive farming, so it's more sustainable. |
