Ear Drum is barrier to what? Auditory Canal is Separated by Tympanic Membrane from Inner Ear
What is Outter Ear Called? Auricle or Pina (cart. part)
What is EAC? Extrernal Auditory Canal
What is the Tracus? Cartilage part just in front of EAC opening
Auricle is comprised of? Cartilage, highly vascularized, outer part we call the "ear" (external part)
Ear Wax is also called? Cerumen
Cerumen contains? AntiBacterial/AntiMicrobials
How is earwax removed naturally from ear? By talking or chewing
What can cause compaction of earwax? Q-tips, hair, over active glands, ear plugs, hearing aids
What happens when removing earwax too much? Infections, compaction, irritation
Sx of Impacted Cerumen? Diff. Hearing, Fullness/Tightness in Ear, Vertigo, Dull Pain
Only FDA Approv. Cerumen Softening Agent? Carbamide Peroxide 6.5% in Anhydrous Glycerin. (Olive Oil may work too, but not approved by FDA)
What other Solns do Pt.'s tend to use to remove Earwax? Hydrogen Peroxide & Alcohol (Not Recommended - Irritants)
How much Carbamide Peroxide in EAC to remove Wax? 5-10 gtts for 15 min. (If Pain, Bleeding, or Dizziness after 4 d consult MD)
Name of Carbamide Peroxide products? Debrox Drops, ERO Drops, Flent's Earwax Removal Sys, Murine Earwax Removal Sys.
What can a water pick do when it hits the ear drum? It puts a hole in it! Never use a water pick to remove earwax!
What is External Otitis? "Swimmer's Ear" Bacterial or Fungus Infection. NO OTC for TX. Need Rx - See MD
S, Sx, Tx of "Water Clogged Ear"? Felt in EAC, Diff. Hearing, Itch, Pain (not worse when tugging), ( >24hr = Tissue Maceration can lead to Infection)
Sx of Swimmer's Ear? Pain is more server if pulled on ear, discharge, fever
Non-Pharm: Tx. of Water Clogged Ear? Plug to break air buble that is trapping water, stamping on feet tugging on ear lobe, (hair drier on low, low/no heat)
Pham Tx of Water Clogged Ear? FDA: 95% Al & 5% Anhydrous Glycerin for "Ear Drying Aid", AAO (Am. Acad. Otolaryngology): 50/50 mix Alcohol & Vinegar.
Tinnitus is? Ringing in Ear(s) caused by Drug Tx (Salicylates, Quinine, Aminoglycosides, Diuretics). Sx of Disease (Meningitis, syphilis, neoplasm, meniere's disease, hypothyroid). Acoustic Trauma
Tx for Tinnitus? Soft Music to mask tinnitus &/or Cochlear Implants
What is Meniere's Disease? Disease of Inner Ear. Imbalance of Fluid in Cochlear Tubes (Laberanth). Sx: Tinnitus, HA, N&V...
What is Otalgia? "Ear Pain" b/c Auricle & EAC are very sensitive. Can be Refered pain from HA, TMJ, Cervical Arthritis. May be infection, or small pimple. See MD for Rx if Inftection (can accompany lung infections w/fever)
When should Earsol HC Drops not be Used? When Pt. has Ear Infection Hydrocortisone products should not be used (although normally useful in removing inflammation otherwise)
What is in Similanson Homeopathic Ear Drops Chamolilla, Merurius, Sulfur (Not FDA Approved, No "Theraputic Agents")
Star Otic Solution Contains? Non-Aqueous Acetic Acid, Burow's Soln, Boric Acid, PEG, (Antiseptic Soln. for minor Irritations)
Otitis Media is? Middle Ear Bacterial Infection, No OTC, See MD (No Itching - Steady Pain, Unilaterally)
External Otitis is? Itchy, Acute Onset of Pain that increases with tragus or auricle movement
