Evolution and Classification

QuestionAnswer
This person is the father of evoution Charles Darwin
Evolution means - Change over time
On the Galapagos Islands, he looked at what bird and what part of the bird? Finch and beaks
And adaptation is Changes in a body to meet a location. For example - the different beaks of a finch to match what they are eating.
Natural selection means - Survival of the fittest and to improve the odds of survival
Homologous structures are - Same order of bones found in different living organisms
Vestigial structures are - Structures no longer being used - wisdom teeth for example or the back legs in a whale
Fossil Records are - History of plants and animals over millions of years. Shows that we may have common ancestors.
The four steps to natural selection are - 1. Overpopulation 2. Genetic Variation 3. Struggle to survive 4. Successful reproduction
A variation is - A small change within species of an organism. Ex - we are all a bit different even though we are humans.
Where are the oldest fossils found - top or bottom? Lowest level or layers
Embryology is - The study of the development of of organisms.
Overproduction means - Lots of food, water, space - lots of offspring
An acquired trait is - A trait developed over a lifetime due to experiences NOT genetic factors. For example, scars from an injury, learning to read, an elephant having a broken tusk and learning to use it a bit differently.
A trait allows an organism a better chance of ____________ Survival
A few plant adaptations would be - Thorns on a rose, thick leaves so water does not escape, losing leaves in the fall to prevent freezing and limbs breaking with snow.
A few animal adaptations would be - Fur color, type of beak, hibernating in the winter,
Which step of natural selection would this be - Each individual looks a little bit different from the others. Genetic variation
Which step of natural selection would this be - Fire came through the area and many died Struggle to survive
Which step of natural selection would this be - Lots of food, water, space - lots of babies Overproduction
Which step of natural selection would this be - The organisms who survive and have the stronger traits, reproduce and pass their DNA on to the next generation. Successful Reproduction
