X Chromosome the sex chromosome found in both male and females
Y Chromosome the sex chromosome found only in males
Testosterone the most important male chromosome, both male and females have it, but additional in males stimulates growth of male organs
Primary sex characteristic The body structures that make sexual reproduction possible(Dick and vagina)
Secondary sex characteristics non-reproductive sexual traits such as female breasts and hips
Spermarche the first ejaculation
Menarche the first period
Intersex a condition present at birth due to unusual combinations of male and female chromosomes, characteristics of both sex
AIDS a life-threatening sexually transmitted infection caused by human immunodeficiency virus (depletes immune system)
Birth control a contraceptive that affects hormones
Impulsivity when passion overwhelms intentions
Alcohol use by depressing brain centers that control judgement, inhibition, and self-awareness it disarms normal restraints
Mass media influenced by popular media
Higher intelligence teens with high rather than average test score often delay sex
Religious engagement actively religious teens often reserve sexual activity for adulthood
Father's presence having a dad around has reduced the risk of teen pregnancy and of sexual activity before age 16
Service-learning participation teens participating in community projects had lower pregnancy rates
Sexual orientation our enduring sexual attraction, usually toward members of our own sex r the other sex
The hypothalamus and sexual orientation male homosexuals have a female differentiation of the hypothalamus
Genetics and twin studies uncover genetic and environmental contribution
Prenatal influences maternal anxiety and depression during pregnancy and infant negative emotional as well as dysregulation can affect the pregnancy
