| foreshadowing | the use of clues that hint at important plot developments that are to follow in a story or drama |
| irony | a contrast or discrepancy between what is states and what is really meant, or between what is expected to happen and what actually does happen |
| verbal irony | a writer or speaker says one thing and means something entirely different |
| dramatic irony | a reader or an audience knows something that a character in the story or play does not |
| situational irony | the writer shows a discrepancy between the expected result of some action or situation and its actual result |
| symbol | something in a literary work which maintains its own meaning while at the same time standing for something broader than itself |
| voice | the distinctive use of language that conveys the author's or narrator's personality to the reader |
| allusion | reference to another piece of literature |
| tone | an author's attitude toward his or her subject matter |
| indirect characterization | through a physical description of the character; through the character's actions; through the character's thoughts, feelings, and speeches; through the comments and reactions of other characters |
| direct characterization | through direct statements giving the writer's opinion of the character |
| dynamic characters | experience some change in personality or attitude |
| static characters | remain the same throughout a narrative |
| flat characters | have only one or two "sides", representing one or two traits; often stereotypes |
| round characters | are complex and have many sides or traits |
| simile | comparison between two basically unlike things using the words "like" or "as" |
| metaphor | comparison between two basically unlike things without using "like" or "as" |
| extended metaphor | a metaphor that continues past a single phrase or sentence |
| diction | a writer's choice of words, particularly for clarity, effectiveness and precision |
| refrain | a word, phrase, line, or group of lines repeated regularly in a pem, usually at the end of each stanza |
| alliteration | the repetition of similar sounds, usually consonants |
| assonance | the repetition of similar vowels sounds, usually close together in a group of words |
| onomatopoeia | a word whose sound in some degree imitates its meaning |
| inversion | the inverted word order of the usual order of words |
| imagery | language that appeals to any sense or combination of senses- sound, smell, taste, feel, look |
| figurative language | language that is not intended to be interpreted in a literal sense |
| figure of speech | a term applied to a specific kind of figurative language, such as metaphor, simile, personification, or hyperbole |
| personification | a figure of speech in which an animal, an object, a natural force, or an idea is given personality, or described as if it were human |
| hyperbole | a figure of speech that uses extravagant exaggeration |
| lyric poetry | poetry that expresses a speaker's thoughts or feelings |
| narrative poetry | poetry that tells a story |
