| hypothesis | possible explanation for a set of observations or possible answer to a scientific question |
| theory | well-tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations |
| data | evidence; information gathered from observations |
| spontaneous generation | hypothesis (disproven) stating that life could arise from nonliving matter |
| controlled experiment | a test of the effect of a single variable by changing it while keeping all other variables the same |
| observation | use of one or more of the senses—sight, hearing, touch, smell, and sometimes taste—to gather information |
| responding variable | factor in an experiment that a scientist wants to observe, which may change in response to the manipulated variable; also known as a dependent variable |
| manipulated variable | factor in an experiment that a scientist purposely changes; also known as independent variable |
| inference | logical interpretation based on prior knowledge and experience |
| metabolism | a set of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up and breaks down materials to gain energy and nutrients from their environment. |
| biology | the science that studies living things |
| evolve | to change over time |
| homeostasis | process by which living things try to maintain a stable internal environment |
| cell | the smallest unit of an organism that can be considered alive. |
| microscope | a device that produces magnified images that are normally too small to see with the naked eye |
| sexual reproduction | process by which cells (sperm and egg) from two different parents unite to produce a new organism |
| levels of organization | From the biosphere to individual molecules, this is how we group the different systems of life |
| stimulus | any signal to which an organism responds. |
| DNA | all living things are based on the genetic code found in these molecules |
| asexual reproduction | a process by which a single cell reproduces a perfect copy (clone) of itself |
| biogenesis | theory that life can only come from other life |
