| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| hypothesis | A possible explanation for a problem using what you know and what you observe. |
| experiment | A controlled procedure designed to test a hypothesis by manipulating variables and observing the resulting effects, aiming to either support or refute the initial hypothesis |
| An experiment usually contains at least ________ variables | two |
| independent variable | the "cause"; the variable that is intentionally changed to observe its effect on the dependent variable.; also called "manipulated variable" |
| dependent variable | the "effect"; the variable that is measured and observed in an experiment. Considered to change or "depend" on the manipulation of the independent variable |
| constant | A factor that does not change when other variables change |
| controls | The standard by which the test results can be compared |
| scientific method | A way of solving problems or answering a question that uses a set of steps to make sure the answer is accurate and based on evidence/facts |
| bias | A perception of the way things are or should be, even if it's not accurate |
| model | A representation of a system, process, idea, or object that helps scientists understand and explain phenomena that are too complex, too large, or too small to observe directly |
| theory | A broad explanation for events that is widely accepted as true. To become a theory, a hypothesis must be tested over and over again, and it must be supported by a great deal of evidence. The "WHY" |
| scientific law | A statement about what happens in nature and that seems to be true all the time; The "WHAT" |
| 7 Steps of the Scientific Method | Question, Research, Hypothesis, Experiment, Data Analysis, Conclusion, and Communication. Although scientists may modify, reorder, or revisit steps on occasion, scientists generally use this basic logical approach. |
| evidence | Facts or data found from direct observation |
| inference | A conclusion reached on the basis of evidence or reasoning; interpreting what you see |
| prediction | A statement that describes what will happen in the future based on observations |
| analyze | To examine methodically and in detail. |
| conclude | A summary of the results of an experiment or investigation. |
| quantitative | Observations that are measured or counted and expressed using numbers; often involves quantities, such as length, temperature, mass, or volume. |
| qualitative | Observations that are described through qualities or characteristics and expressed using words rather than numbers. It often involves descriptions based on senses, such as color, texture, smell, or sound. |
