hypothesis A possible explanation for a problem using what you know and what you observe.
experiment A controlled procedure designed to test a hypothesis by manipulating variables and observing the resulting effects, aiming to either support or refute the initial hypothesis
An experiment usually contains at least ________ variables two
independent variable the "cause"; the variable that is intentionally changed to observe its effect on the dependent variable.; also called "manipulated variable"
dependent variable the "effect"; the variable that is measured and observed in an experiment. Considered to change or "depend" on the manipulation of the independent variable
constant A factor that does not change when other variables change
controls The standard by which the test results can be compared
scientific method A way of solving problems or answering a question that uses a set of steps to make sure the answer is accurate and based on evidence/facts
bias A perception of the way things are or should be, even if it's not accurate
model A representation of a system, process, idea, or object that helps scientists understand and explain phenomena that are too complex, too large, or too small to observe directly
theory A broad explanation for events that is widely accepted as true. To become a theory, a hypothesis must be tested over and over again, and it must be supported by a great deal of evidence. The "WHY"
scientific law A statement about what happens in nature and that seems to be true all the time; The "WHAT"
7 Steps of the Scientific Method Question, Research, Hypothesis, Experiment, Data Analysis, Conclusion, and Communication. Although scientists may modify, reorder, or revisit steps on occasion, scientists generally use this basic logical approach.
evidence Facts or data found from direct observation
inference A conclusion reached on the basis of evidence or reasoning; interpreting what you see
prediction A statement that describes what will happen in the future based on observations
analyze To examine methodically and in detail.
conclude A summary of the results of an experiment or investigation.
quantitative Observations that are measured or counted and expressed using numbers; often involves quantities, such as length, temperature, mass, or volume.
qualitative Observations that are described through qualities or characteristics and expressed using words rather than numbers. It often involves descriptions based on senses, such as color, texture, smell, or sound.
