| Nature and Nurture | does our genetic inheritance interact with our experiences to influence our development? |
| Continuity and stages | what parts of development are gradual and continuous? What parts change abruptly in separate stages? |
| Stability and change | which of our traits persist through life, how do we change as we age? |
| Zygote | the fertilized egg; it enters a 2-week period of rapid cell division and develops into an embryo |
| Embryo | the developing human organism from 2-weeks after fertilization through the second month |
| Fetus | the developing human organism from 9 weeks after conception to birth |
| Teratogens | agents such as chemicals and viruses, that can reach the embryo or fetus during prenatal development and cause harm |
| Fetal Alcohol Syndrome | physical and cognitive abnormalities in children caused by a pregnant women's heavy drinking |
| Habituation | decreasing responsiveness with repeated stimulation |
| Babinski Reflex | action in which the big toe remains extended when the sole of the foot is stimulated, abnormal except in young infants |
| Moro Reflex | an involuntary protective motor response against abrupt disruption of body balance or extremely sudden stimulation |
| Plantar Reflex | a nociceptive segmental spinal reflex that serves the purpose of protecting the sole of the foot |
| Swimming Reflex | Infant's tendency to paddle and kick in a sort of swimming motion when lying face down in a body of water |
| Stepping Reflex | when their feet touch the ground and they try to walk |
| Grasping Reflex | when arms and legs spring out, quickly followed by fist clenching and loud crying |
| Rooting Reflex | when something touches their cheek, babies turn toward the touch and open their mouth |

| Frontal Lobes | rapid growth happens, this is where rational planning is formed |
