Development psychology a branch of psychology that studies physical, cognitive, and social change throughout the life span
Nature and Nurture does our genetic inheritance interact with our experiences to influence our development?
Continuity and stages what parts of development are gradual and continuous? What parts change abruptly in separate stages?
Stability and change which of our traits persist through life, how do we change as we age?
Zygote the fertilized egg; it enters a 2-week period of rapid cell division and develops into an embryo
Embryo the developing human organism from 2-weeks after fertilization through the second month
Fetus the developing human organism from 9 weeks after conception to birth
Teratogens agents such as chemicals and viruses, that can reach the embryo or fetus during prenatal development and cause harm
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome physical and cognitive abnormalities in children caused by a pregnant women's heavy drinking
Habituation decreasing responsiveness with repeated stimulation
Babinski Reflex action in which the big toe remains extended when the sole of the foot is stimulated, abnormal except in young infants
Moro Reflex an involuntary protective motor response against abrupt disruption of body balance or extremely sudden stimulation
Plantar Reflex a nociceptive segmental spinal reflex that serves the purpose of protecting the sole of the foot
Swimming Reflex Infant's tendency to paddle and kick in a sort of swimming motion when lying face down in a body of water
Stepping Reflex when their feet touch the ground and they try to walk
Grasping Reflex when arms and legs spring out, quickly followed by fist clenching and loud crying
Rooting Reflex when something touches their cheek, babies turn toward the touch and open their mouth
Neural hardware and cognitive hardware these develop together
Frontal Lobes rapid growth happens, this is where rational planning is formed
Association Areas rapid growth happens, this is where rational planning is formed
Pruning the brain will shut down synapses if they are not being used
Universal mother development sequence babies roll over before they sit unsupported, and they usually crawl before they walk
Infantile amnesia a rapid neuron growth disrupts the circuits that stored old memories
