Cohort a group of people sharing a common characteristic, such as from a given time period
Crystallized intelligence our accumulated knowledge and verbal skills, ends to increase with age
Fluid intelligence our ability to reason speedily and abstractly, tends to decrease with age
Cross-sectional study research that compares people of different ages at the same point in time
Longitudinal study research that follows and retests the same people over time
5 reasons why highly intelligent people live healthier and longer lives Better jobs, and healthier environments, intelligence encourages healthy living, prenatal events or early childhood illnesses might have influenced both intelligence and health, a “well-wired” body as evidence by fast reaction speeds
Intellectual disability a condition of limited mental ability indicated by an intelligence test score of 70 or below
Down syndrome a condition of mild to server intellectual disability and associated physical disorders caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21
Flynn effect because of this we must constantly re-standardize tests
Heritability The proportion of variation among individuals in a group that we can attribute to genes
Identical twins and the environment raised together are nearly similar as those of the same person
Fraternal twins and the environment differ more in person wise than identical twins
Adoption studies adoption enhances the intelligence scores of mistreated or neglected children
Neglect: sensory deprivation, social isolation, poverty this can slow normal brain development
Schooling and intelligence one intervention that effects intelligence scores, both enhance later outcomes
Growth mindset a focus on learning and growing
