Properties of Matter

| Term | Definition |

| matter | Anything that takes up space and has mass. |
| volume | The amount of space something takes up, measured in liters. |
| mass | The amount of matter something has, measured in grams. |
| solid | A state of matter that has a definite shape and volume. This state is firm and can hold weight. These particles are packed together. |
| gas | A state of matter that fill all the space available. It does not have definite shape or volume. These particles are very far apart. |
| liquid | A state of matter that has no definite shape but does have definite volume. These particle are spread out which allows this substance to be poured. |
| chemical change | When the particles in a substance have been arranged to create a new substance. |
| rust | A substance that forms when oxygen and iron chemically change. |
| physical change | When the shape, size or state of matter has changed. The total mass of an object will not change during this process. |
| water vapor | The gas form of water in the air (humidity) |
| decay | When fruit or other foods spoil, they go through this chemical change. |
| texture | The property that describes how the skin of an apple feels. |
| hardness | A physical property that describes how easily a material can be scratched. |
| magnet | A material that can pull some kinds of metals toward it. |
| slower | As an object cools, the particles move ________. |
| faster | As an object heats up, the particles move ___________. |
