Heart vocabulary

TermDefinition
Aorta Largest artery of the body and carries blood from the heart to the circulatory system.
Left Ventricle Located in the bottom left of heart, pumps oxygenated blood out of the heart through the aortic valve and into the aortic arch.
Right Ventricle Pumps oxygen-depleted blood to the lungs.
Left Atrium Receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and pumps it to the left ventricle.
Right Atrium The right atrium receives blood low in oxygen from the body and then empties the blood into the right ventricle.
Coronary Artery Coronary arteries supply blood to the heart muscle.
Apex The apex of the heart is the pointed tip of the heart's left ventricle that helps pump blood out of the heart.
Superior Vena Cava A large vein that carries blood from the upper half of the body to the heart.
Inferior Vena Cava Carries oxygen-depleted blood back to your heart from the lower part of your body.
Pulmonary Artery Blood vessels that carry oxygen-poor blood from the right side of your heart to your lungs.
Pulmonary Veins Blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood from your lungs to your heart.
Cordae Tendinea Holding the atrioventricular valves in place while the heart is pumping blood.
Papillary Muscles When the ventricles contract, the papillary muscles also contract, pulling on the chordae tendinae to keep the AV valves closed.
Septum Helps keep oxygen-rich blood from the lungs from mixing with oxygen-poor blood from the body.
Tricuspid Valve Ensures that blood flows from the right atrium to the right ventricle.
Bicuspid/Mitral Valve It opens to let blood flow from your left atrium to your left ventricle.
Aortic Semilunar Valve It makes blood flow in one direction from the left ventricle to the aorta.
Pulmonary Semilunar Valve To ensure the flow of blood in one direction from the right ventricle to the lung.
Brachiocephalic Artery Carry oxygen-rich blood from the aorta to the right side of the body, including the head, neck, and upper limbs.
Left Main Coronary Artery Supplies blood to the left side of the heart muscle.
Left Anterior Descending Coronary Artery Supplies blood to the front of the left side of the heart.
Circumflex Coronary Artery Supplies blood to the outer side and back of the heart.
Left Posterior Descending Coronary Artery Supplies blood to the bottom of the heart.
Right Coronary Artery This artery sends blood to the right side of the heart.
Posterior DescendingCoronary Artery The PDA supplies the posterior third of the interventricular septum.
